In a memoir hailed for its searing candor and wit, Alice Sebold reveals how her life was utterly transformed when, as an eighteen-year-old college freshman, she was brutally raped and beaten in a park near campus. What propels this chronicle of her recovery is Sebold's indomitable spirit - as she struggles for understanding ("After telling the hard facts to anyone, from lover to friend, I have changed in their eyes"); as her dazed family and friends sometimes bungle their efforts to provide comfort and support; and as, ultimately, she triumphs, managing through grit and coincidence to help secure her attacker's arrest and conviction. In a narrative by turns disturbing, thrilling, and inspiring, Alice Sebold illuminates the experience of trauma victims even as she imparts wisdom profoundly hard-won: "You save yourself or you remain unsaved."
King?s Counsel – A Memoir of War, Espionage and Diplomacy in the Middle East
James Joyce's first novel follows the life of Stephen Dedalus, an artistic and fiercely individual young man. Along the way, Stephen learns to negotiate the 'snares of the world', to avoid the pitfalls of his dysfunctional family, his terrifying and repressive boarding school, and the various beautiful young ladies who capture his heart. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is an unforgettable depiction of childhood and adolescence, as well as a lyrical evocation of life in Ireland over a century ago. It shocked readers on its publication in 1916 and it is now regarded as one of the most significant literary works of the twentieth century. This beautiful Macmillan Collector's Library edition of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man features an afterword by Peter Harness.

This book looks at how one Malaysian Chinese child became a bilingual speaker of two languages - Mandarin and English. The child was observed from birth until he was two years old. This book demonstrates the type of vowels and consonants acquired and how these were combined to become sounds which would later turn into words of the adult variety. There was evidence to suggest that the child's early words were nouns and later verbs and adjectives. Language mixing also occurred from a very young age i.e. before two years old. This phenomenon was attributed to the child's developmental stage of growth. As the child grew older and as his physique and cognition developed, he was also able to use words to perform various communicative functions. By then he also showed the ability to distinguish the two language systems. At the point where the child was able to articulate two equivalent words for the same concept, the child was described as a 'true bilingual'.
